You search your own business on Google Maps and it's not there. Or it shows for your name but never for "electrician near me"while competitors you've never heard of fill the map pack.
There's always a specific reason. Here are the nine we find most often when a London-area business comes to us with this exact complaint, in the order you should check them.
1. The profile was never verified
An unverified Google Business Profile doesn't show publicly at all. If you created a listing but never finished video or phone verification, it's sitting invisible in your dashboard. Sign in, look for the "Verify" prompt, and complete it, our Google Maps setup guide walks through the 2026 verification process.
2. The profile is suspended
If your listing vanished overnight, search your business name while signed into the owning account. A red suspension notice means Google flagged a policy issue, usually a keyword-stuffed business name, a virtual-office address, or too many edits at once. Fix the violation first, then file the reinstatement form. Appealing without fixing the cause gets denied and slows every later appeal.
3. You're searching from the wrong place
Map results are radically local. If you're searching from home, 20 minutes from your shop, you may genuinely not be in the result set, while customers standing near you see you fine. Test in an incognito window and set the location to your service area, or just check the performance tab: if you're getting views and calls, you're showing up, just not where you're standing.
4. Wrong or vague category
If you're a "Restaurant" but the searcher wants "Pizza delivery", the specific competitor wins. Your primary category is the strongest lever on the profile, make it the most specific true description of your business, and add secondary categories for the rest. Full details in our Google Business Profile optimization checklist.
5. A thin profile in a crowded market
In dense categories, restaurants, salons, contractors, Google has dozens of candidates within range. It fills the three map-pack slots with profiles that are complete, reviewed, and active. If your profile has four photos from 2021, no services listed, and 11 reviews, you're structurally outgunned. Completeness is free; do all of it.
6. Inconsistent name, address, and phone across the web
Google cross-references your profile against your website and directory listings. If your website says "123 Main St. Unit B" and the profile says "123 Main Street", or an old listing carries your previous phone number, trust drops, and so does ranking. Fix your site first, then the big directories. This cleanup is standard local SEO work.
7. Duplicate listings splitting your strength
Two profiles for the same business, an old unclaimed one plus your new one, split reviews and confuse Google. Search Maps for your name and old addresses or phone numbers. Claim duplicates and merge or remove them through the profile support flow.
8. Your website isn't backing you up
The map algorithm reads your website. If the site is slow, has no city or service wording, or barely exists, Google has little evidence you're relevant for "kitchen renovation London". A fast site with real service pages gives your profile something to stand on, it's why we treat web design and local SEO as one job, not two.
9. Service-area settings that don't match reality
Service-area businesses that list a 200 km radius, or a storefront address that's actually a house, trip Google's filters. Set the service area to where you honestly work, and if you have a real storefront, make sure it's set as one, the two listing types rank differently.
Find the actual culprit in ten minutes
Work the list top to bottom: verification → suspension → search location → category → completeness → consistency → duplicates → website → service area. One of them is your answer, and most are fixable the same day.
If you want the diagnosis done for you, run a free SEO audit, it flags the website-side issues automatically, or book a call and we'll look at the profile side too.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps after fixing these issues?
Verification and suspension fixes show within days. Category, completeness, and consistency improvements typically move rankings over two to eight weeks. Competitive categories in bigger cities sit at the slow end.
Why does my business show up on Google Search but not Google Maps?
Search shows your website; Maps shows your Business Profile. If you have the first but not the second, the profile is unverified, suspended, or missing. They're separate systems that happen to share a results page.
My business shows up, but only when people type the exact name. Why?
That's the difference between branded and category ranking. Name searches only need the profile to exist; category searches ("dentist near me") are competitive and depend on categories, reviews, completeness, and your website's local relevance, points 4 through 9 above.
Can a competitor report my listing and get it removed?
Anyone can suggest edits or report a listing, but removals only happen when Google finds an actual policy violation. Keep your profile clean, accurate name, real address, honest categories, and hostile reports have nothing to bite on.
